We've always had a soft spot for independent spirits, and we've enjoyed watching the Indy Spirits Expo grow over the last few years. We've always thought it was exceedingly cool to get so many of the smaller brands together in one place, and give them a chance to sound off about their products. Plus, we really had a great time at the event we went to a couple years ago, sampling booze and getting shwag and generally feeling like big shots.
If you're going to be in the NYC area on June 23, we recommend you grab a ticket and go check it out - you'll be able to taste all kinds of booze you won't find at your local Applebee's, and support some up-and-coming brands at the same time. Check out who will be there at the Indy Spirits Expo site, and get ticket info as well. When you get there, tell them Liquor Snob sent you...even though they probably won't have any idea what you're talking about.

It's time once again for the annual Indy Spirits Expo at TOUCH nightclub in NYC, and it looks to be a good crop of up-and-coming brands. We love to support the little guys so we strongly recommend you check them out if you're in the area - we'd be going but we have a conflict that week.
So what can you expect at the Expo? The opportunity to taste all kinds of spirits you might not have had the chance to check out yet, and some you may not have heard of. The exhibitors are a rogue's gallery of brands we've reviewed and loved, from Orange V vodka to Scorpion Mezcal, 44 North Vodka, and Double Cross Vodka. There also some other brands we've heard good things about but haven't had a chance to review - Castrie's Peanut Creme is excellent, and we'd love to get our hands any of the other brands exhibiting.
Also, Port Charlotte Scotch will also be there, and even if we didn't like the other brands that are exhibiting (which we do) a sample of that stuff is worth your price of admission.
As your attorney, we recommend you head on over for some samples and chat, as well as probably some free swag. For more information and tickets, head on over to the Indy Spirits Expo website.

Ladies and gentlemen, hitch up your Snuggies. We knew there would be an actual use for those things, other than letting some old lady answer the phone without getting her forearms cold. Turns out, you can drink while you're wearing them!
That's right, the new cool thing to do is put on a blanket with arms, and go out drinkin'. If you ask us, it's a moral imperative. What? You don't own a Snuggie, you say? Well, just watch some late night TV and pick one up. Or, you could do what the cool kids do and pick up a Slanket instead - we hear they were around first, so you'll have the indie street cred.
Go to PubCrawls.com for details on the April 18th pub crawl in NYC. If you're in the Chicago area, there's one on the same day in the Windy City - details at SnuggiePubCrawl.com.

Another year, another missed opportunity for Santarchy. Why is it we always forget about it until it's too late to actually go to one? We suck at life when it comes to drunken, middle finger-wielding Santa Clauses. Luckily, Boing Boing picked up our slack this year.
Check out their Santarchy videos, part 1 and part 2. And merry f'ing Christmas!

Calling all Boston boozers - we've discovered an interesting opportunity to get a bit blotto on wine all while keeping your conscience clean. No, we're not talking about juicing on sacramental wine...in fact our thoughts were entirely secular. A friend of ours let us know about an event where you can be bussed out into the woods, given a wine tasting, and then go apple picking, all to benefit charity.
As long as we're kept away from the ladders after a couple glasses of wine, we can't see a down side at all. Learn how you can hit an apple festival, stock up at the Nashoba Valley Winery, and benefit the On Your Feet Project all at the same time at their Wine and Apples page. The event itself is on September 30; just make sure you buy your tickets by September 26...though it may sell out earlier than that.

We've been on a few bar crawls in our time, and we have to say they can be damned fun if they're executed correctly. We just found out about the Great Boston Beer Marathon, which starts in the Fenway area and makes its way to the Allston/Brighton area, and it sounds like they're doing it right. If you're in the Boston area on June 23 and have some free time between noon and 2AM, we recommend you check out this event we can only assume will become a full-on tradition.
Just think - if you play your cards right you could end up just like the people who run that other Boston marathon - delerious and exhausted, with bloody nipples.
Go to the Beer Marathon site for more information; signup is availalble through June 18.

We hit the June VodkaFest this Sunday down in Manhattan, and it was great to hobnob (is that a word?) with some of the elite of independent spirits distributors. We had some drinks, had some laughs, but overall had to take it easy because after the event we had to drive four hours home. We were still able to taste just about everything that was on display, however - and we hope we didn't gross anyone out too much when we sipped and then spit it right back into the cup.
We've rounded up info on everyone we interacted with, along with some quick notes on the folks we haven't done full reviews on yet. Read on for our thoughts on each brand and our tastes of each, in more-or-less chronological order.
Also - we didn't run into any of the VodkaFest contest winners, probably because we skinned out a bit early, but we'd love to hear from you if you made it. You know who you are.
