KU:L Vodka Review

Do you ever have one of those moments where everything comes together exactly, a lilting song of perfection with each piece fitting into the puzzle almost of its own accord? This is the opposite of how things went with our KU:L Vodka review. That's not to say we didn't like the stuff...quite the contrary. It was just a comedy of errors of lost notes and spacey editors that started way back in November. But you know what? We think KU:L is tasty enough and a good enough value you won't mind the wait.

Read our notes below.

kul_vodka_bottle.jpgKU:L Vodka, Imported from Poland
80 Proof (40% ABV)
Typical Price: About $10 (!) for 750ML
Available at Sam's Wine & Spirits

The Look:
With a brightly-colored label and snazzy blue cap, you'd be hard-pressed to overlook KU:L on the liquor store shelves. Plus, we got a distinctly art deco vibe from the label, like we should peel off the label and hang it on our wall.

The Nose:
We've been quoted before as saying pretty much all vodka smells the same. After all, it's a neutral spirit that's sort of supposed to blend into whatever you mix it with, right? KU:L breaks out of the mold with an airy, almost sweet scent that's much different than the rubbing alcohol smell you find in other vodkas at its price point. In fact, KU:L has a pleasant enough smell we'd think about applying it as cologne if we weren't busy drinking it.

Don't believe us? How about some corroborating evidence from the folks at Tastings.com who attribute "subtle hints of anise seed and custard aromas" to the vodka. They also gave it 91 points and a "Best Buy" rating. How does that grab you?

The Taste:
The sweetness we detected in the nose carries on into the taste of the vodka, but not in an overpowering or liqueur-type way. It just kind of hangs out at the very edge of the otherwise dry and mineral flavors in it, reassuring us we could drink a LOT of it. It's also ridiculously smooth, enough so you could drink it out of the bottle. We should know - we watch an intern try it before we snatched the review bottle from his lips.

The Verdict:
To be blunt, we don't think you'll find a better vodka for the money. Period.

If you can find a bottle, we suggest you buy it. As your attorneys, we recommend you buy a second bottle too...trust us. Try it chilled or on the rocks, with a twist of lemon. Even if you're not a vodka drinker, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised. All in all, we say KU:L is a conqueror.
