Canton Ginger Liqueur Review

When we first heard about Canton Ginger Liqueur, we had a pretty good idea we were going to like it. After all, we love ginger like it's our job, and marrying it with cognac can go under our "why didn't we think of this?" file. What we didn't expect, however, was that we'd fall in love.

Canton Ginger Liqueur
VSOP Cognac Infused with Baby Ginger
80 Proof (40% ABV)
Typical Price: About $30
The Company Line:

Originally created on the French Indochine ginger root estate of Domaine de Canton, this aromatic elixir first became popular among the colonial French aristocracy. A hand-crafted infusion of superior VSOP Cognac and baby ginger, Domaine de Canton is the world's first premium ginger liqueur. Enjoy it in a cocktail and discover a rare union of tropical romance and continental sophistication.

Our thoughts: From the first whiff we had of Canton, we knew we were in trouble. The gingery nose was delicate and had everything we're looking for from ginger, with a light twinge of the vanilla and honey that sweeten it. Our first taste kept up the balance, with only a hint of the burn you might expect from ginger, tempered with a sweetness that just made us want to sip again. We loved Canton on the rocks, and we liked the cocktails we made with it as well - especially La Coloniale (2 parts Canton, 3 parts Hendricks). In fact, we kept thinking of reasons to drink it or take it into our bodies otherwise (we're thinking it'd be great on vanilla ice cream).

The Verdict: Canton is officially on our list of favorites now. That's it. We loved it from sip one, and everyone we offered it to clamored for more. It's worth every penny of the thirty bucks you'll pay to get a bottle, and if you find it, buy it on sight. If you could, pick up an extra bottle for us too.

As nice as this liqueur is, it doesn't even come close to the original Canton Ginger Liqueur. The original was smooth and gentle, with a definite touch of ginger. It's like the difference between Reeds Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic), and Barritts from Bermuda.

This newest incarnation is OK, but the bottle I have I have been sipping for a couple of years. The original I went through in about a week.

Please bring back the original.

Actually, I find it WAY better than the one from China -- slightly higher proof, I believe, far more structured and complex, can actually have it by itself or in cocktails. I get mine from BevMo.com, but I don't know if they deliver to all states...

I loved to make for the holidays their recipe for soup but have been unable to buy for several years now. Anyone know where I can order it online and sent to me?

The original is good too, but doesn't have that great bite the new Domaine de Canton does. There's also no way I could have ever just sipped the original, it was way too "hot" alcohol-wise and had to be used in a cocktail.

It's NOWHERE near as good as the ORIGINAL from China! :(

I didn't get a chance to taste Canton yet but I've only heard great things about it. I just read Paul Pacult's review (he's suppose to be America's foremost expert on distilled spirits) and he gave Canton 5 stars. I really have to go get myself a bottle! I'm running to get one now!

Canton is amazing! Astor Wines in NYC is giving free tasters of Canton this Sunday, November 4.
